- Exactly what you'd expect - Everything is biggerReview by Chad78
Let me start by saying, this is very cool. And it could actually be bigger than it claims (see the Math section below).
There are no rule changes. There are no special tokens or unique board spaces. This is standard Monopoly, only bigger. They do include the Speed Die, as I think all Monopoly games have since about 2007. And the first 2 spaces are Brown instead of Purple, which has been happening since about the same time. (Brown has been the standard color for a long time in Europe, but in the US, the first 2 spaces were purple until the last decade - I'm from the US.)
Regardless of it's exact ratio to the standard game (and there are so many variations of Monopoly "standard" is a very loose term) the thing is big.
This really shines on the tokens. The larger tokens have much more detail than their smaller standard brethren. They look great. To me, the tokens are enough to make this a must-have to any Monopoly collector or enthusiast. The only complaint I have is that they follow the current trend of only including 8 tokens instead of 10, 11, or even 12, as Monopoly has in the past.
The tokens included are:
Top Hat, Car, Shoe (or Boot), Battleship, Howitzer (or Cannon), Thimble, Scottie Dog, and Iron
There's no Horse & Rider, no Wheelbarrow, no MoneyBag, no Train, and no Cat.
(It's kind of odd that they have the Cannon but not the Wheelbarrow. Most standard editions since about 2008 have eliminated the Horse & Rider and Cannon, but included the Wheelbarrow.)
One note about the board. It is folded more than twice. When opening the board from the box, it unfolds once - revealing two halves, which are each folded twice - meaning there are 3 sections on each side for a total of 6 section. It also means that there is a cut between the two halves going 2/3 of the way down the board. While the build quality is good, I can see this being a problem long term.
I bought mine on sale, and at the price I got it, it was a must have purchase. At full price, it is still worth considering for major fans of the series.
======Caution - math ahead!========
The box says everything is 50% larger - I think they actually underestimate that. It seems to me that the board is pretty much 50% is both directions, which means that overall it's actually more than 100% bigger (area = height * width, so if each side is 1.5 times as big as the original... 1.5 * 1.5 = 2.25 meaning the board would be 125% bigger than the original).
If I had a ruler I would confirm that, but laying various "standard size" Monopoly boards on top of the unfolded Giant board makes it look like it is more than 50% bigger overall, while maybe not quite 50% bigger in each direction. (Posted on 12/10/13)
